Upscale Potting Bench

When we made the leap to our new digs six years ago, I was tickled pink to discover a garden shed waiting for me.

Now, this shed had clearly lived a life – it had been a makeshift outdoor kitchen at some point, complete with a propane cooktop, which is just fancy talk for “let’s set things on fire outside.” And there was a workbench, built from 2x4s, that could only be described as a ‘creative interpretation’ of what a workbench should be, but hey, it did the job for my gardening shenanigans.

I had been mulling over bench replacement ideas, flipping through potting bench plans like they were fashion magazines, but nothing screamed “take me home” until this week. A trip to Habitat for Humanity turned my browsing into a bonanza! I stumbled upon a dresser that looked like it had retired from a nursing home — definitely had stories to tell. And they were also clearing out Corian countertops that could make a chef weep with joy. The size was just right!

I jumped at the chance and snatched up the dresser and countertop for just $40!

My husband, the brave knight of heavy lifting, returned to haul our treasures, and then my son flexed his muscles to assist with the installation — because, let’s be honest, that dresser could win a weightlifting competition.

So, I rose early, ready to bid farewell to the old bench and lay the groundwork for the new fabulousness. My son arrived, and we were all hands on deck!

After we finished installing, I had to channel my inner cleaning guru on the drawer tracks, which were in dire need of a makeover due to a dust bunnies convention. Once they sparkled, I plopped in the drawers and swapped out the cabinet hardware with some bling I had lying around.

Next up: organizing! I scoured through my garden supplies, tossed out the unwanted, and began filling those drawers like a Tetris master. Now, my shed is a spacious sanctuary!

I am downright delighted with the outcome! It’s like I took a trip to DIY paradise!
