Little Acres Vegetable Garden Build

Phase 1 of my vegetable garden upgrades. Layout and build of the garden sections.

I have called my vegetable garden Little Acres for years. I was at an auction and there was an antique sign which I bought which said Little Acres and that’s what it has been called ever since.

Yesterday, the hubby and I began building out the garden. I had purchased the  wood, wire panels and conduit I needed last weekend. We spent the week then sealing the wood with a good outdoor sealer to protect the board and extend their life.

We started with building the bigger boxes first around the edge of the garden. As usual, what I have on paper did not match exactly so we had to measure them out to fit the way I wanted it to.

We had a supply of old hinges from cabinets that were in the garage that we had saved and used those to join the corners.  I did end up have to pick up a few more hinges as we did not have enough but I am happy with the result. The previous boxes we had build were just nailed together and the hinges provide more support.

Once we had all the boxes built I had to start leveling them. There is a slight slope in this garden so I started at the top and worked by hand moving the dirt and leveling it out in area so that I could get my boxes set properly. Took me a few hours but well worth the effort.

Next project to finish are the trellises. One for Tomatoes and one for Cucumbers. You can see in the the picture that I found these 3’x6′ fence panels which will attach to conduit. I will have a 12′ trellis at the top of the garden and then I re-use the PVC trellis and re-work that into the Cucumber trellis.

There are a few shrubs that I bought at the end of last year that I temporarily put in the garden for winter and I will move those sometime this week if the weather cooperates. Yesterday was 70º and today it is 40º and rainy. Love that Spring weather!
